Migration Matters comment on new net migration figures (27/08/15)

Commenting on the new migration figures, Atul Hatwal, director of the Migration Matters Trust said,

"Immigration is rising because our economy is expanding. We have the best part of 1m vacancies in the British economy and Britain's businesses are desperate for skilled labour. Without migrants' skills, orders will go unfulfilled, businesses will suffer, the economy will stall and jobs will be at risk.

Barbara Roche, chair of the cross-party group, the Migration Matters Trust commented,

“Today’s migration figures carry a warning to all of the parties for the next election: promise what you can deliver and deliver what you promise.

The public is already cynical about the mainstream parties’ policies on immigration and committing to unachievable targets makes matters worse.

It’s time to be straight with the public on two counts.

Comment by Migration Matters on Sir Andrew Green's peerage

Atul Hatwal, Director of the Migration Matters Trust, commenting on reports of a peerage for the chair of Migration Watch, Sir Andrew Green, said,

"Migration Watch is an organisation that has had its reports castigated as "sloppy," "wrong," and "based on guess-work" by academics at University College London.

The Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail recently had to print corrections to stories based on Migration Watch reports after a ruling by the Press Complaints Commission.

New figures on Romanian and Bulgarian migration show Farage’s forecast was almost twenty times too high

In response to the new Labour Force Survey figures released today (13/08/14), Atul Hatwal, Director of the Migration Matters Trust commented,

“These figures expose the scale of scaremongering by Nigel Farage and Ukip over Romanian and Bulgarian migration.

Farage predicted there would be 5,000 a week arriving for several years. Today’s government statistics show that in the first 6 months of the year, the total rise in the numbers of Romanian and Bulgarian nationals was just 7,000.

Comment by Migration Matters on the Prime Minister's article in the Daily Telegraph (29/07/14)

Commenting on the article by the Prime Minister in this morning's Daily Telegraph (29/07/14), Atul Hatwal, Director of the Migration Matters Trust said,

"Action needs to be taken to ensure a robust, secure benefits system and that the perception of “benefits tourism” is tackled. Having a fair social security system, where everyone contributes is incredibly important if we are to retain public support for our welfare state.

Responding to the latest immigration figures (22/05/14), Barbara Roche, chair of the Migration Matters Trust commented,

“Immigration is rising because the economy is growing. Without migrants to plug skills gaps, businesses would struggle to grow and the recovery would be put at risk.

Let’s not forget that we currently have over 600,000 unfilled jobs in the British economy, the highest level since before the recession.

Comment by Migration Matters on figures on Romanian and Bulgarian migration (14/05/14)

In response to the Labour Force Survey figures released today (14/05/14), Barbara Roche, chair of the Migration Matters Trust commented,

"After all of Ukip’s prejudice and scaremongering over Romanian and Bulgarian migration, today’s figures suggest the numbers of their citizens in Britain has actually fallen by 3,000 since transitional controls were lifted at the start of the year.

This is after Nigel Farage claimed that over 5,000 would be arriving each week, every week for several years.
